Madcap Beauty Spot welcomes Lynn Price as the Featured Artist for September and October.
About the featured work and how Lynn started at Patricia Letterpress:
I had recently returned to town. Without a studio it was difficult to continue drawing and painting, so when I walked past Patricia Letterpress in Townsite one evening I was curious about the space. I asked Laura at my next hair appointment and she put me in touch with Gary Shilling who, along with founder Stuart Isto, run Patricia Letterpress as an open studio, meaning they support and mentor artists who have a letterpress project idea. I went to a workshop offered by Gary and Stuart and I was hooked!
I started to work out of the studio on a weekly basis, experimenting and getting more comfortable with the medium. Conveniently, I was able to buy good quality paper and ink locally (shout out to qathet Art + Wares!). Eventually, I started working in opposition to the goals of the letterpress: instead of using clear language to communicate a message, I arranged letters and punctuation to make words into ambiguous, abstract forms.
The piece I am showing at Madcap Beauty Spot is from She Comes in Colours, a series of unique prints that spell out the colour of ink they are printed in.
Artist Bio:
Lynn Price is a visual artist and educator living and working in the qathet region. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from Concordia University and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Emily Carr University of Art and Design, as well as a Bachelor of Music from The University of British Columbia. Her work has been featured in exhibitions in Canada, including a solo exhibition, How Small a Thought, at the McClure Gallery in Montreal. Price is the recipient of a number of awards and scholarships, including the Mary Plumb Blade Award (painting) and the Governor General’s Silver Academic Medal from Emily Carr University, as well as the Joseph Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarship (SSHRC) and British Columbia Arts Council Scholarships and the Lillian Vineberg Graduate Award (Painting and Drawing) for her MFA studies at Concordia University. She is the 2018 recipient of the Takao Tanabe Prize for an emerging painter based in British Columbia.
